Tech’s Next Quantum Leap: Buckypaper
It’s called “buckypaper” and looks a lot like ordinary carbon paper, but don’t be fooled by the cute name or flimsy appearance. It could revolutionize the way everything from airplanes to TVs are made.
Buckypaper is 10 times lighter but potentially 500 times stronger than steel when sheets of it are stacked and pressed together to form a composite. Unlike conventional composite materials, though, it conducts electricity like copper or silicon and disperses heat like steel or brass.

Dance of the Funky-Shape-Things
What you’re about to see is a mixture of corn starch and water, in a metal tray, held onto a subwoofer. Cool.

Musical Tesla Coil
The music you’re about to hear is not being played “in the background” - the sound is actually created by the Tesla Coil itself. VERY cool!

The Next New Deal
Most of you reading this are too darned young to remember Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “New Deal“. (Whippersnappers!) Well I knew FDR. FDR was a friend of mine, and Senator, you are no FDR! (Sorry - senility kicked in there for a second. Most of you won’t get that joke anyway. Whippersnappers!)
When FDR took over this country in 19 and 33, the nation was in a shambles. (Much as it is today after eight years of Bush, Cheney and their shenanigans.) FDR brought this country up by its bootstraps with a series of programs collectively called the “New Deal”. It’s a shame that more of you young people don’t know more about the New Deal because it created Social Security, the FDIC, union protection programs, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA - now HUD) and upgraded much of the national infrastructure (much of which is in desperate need of upgrading again, after just 70 short years!)
Well, I’ve been thinking a lot about the New Deal over the last few years. We need another one. And here’s a good start…
